Curriculum

Al-Bayan curriculum documents have been created to align and connect core content and concepts as well as essential skills and processes in a logical, progressively deepening manner through which students examine, analyze, and apply ideas and theories, practices and procedures to everyday situations. This process is facilitated by the Curriculum Coordinator in collaboration with BBS teachers and administration. A well-structured curriculum will ensure a firm and balanced educational foundation to guide students in becoming informed, thoughtful, and resourceful individuals who are ready to make their contributions in both the local and global societies. To this end, curriculum work continues to seek ways to be more effective, relevant, and applicable in answer to life’s continually changing challenges and demands.

Al-Bayan Bilingual School delivers the Arabic curriculum offered and prepared by the Ministry of Education in the State of Kuwait. The textbooks and curricula are based on standards and competencies to achieve practical and functional skills. These standards and competencies are relevant to the diverse needs and capabilities of learners and meet the requirements of the community and the labor market. The Arabic curriculum is aligned to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world in the field of education, human behavior, and technology. In addition, it caters for contemporary cultural and civil developments. The curriculum is supported with various activities and readings to enrich students' information and analytical abilities.

The Art Curricula focuses on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design that constitute all art creations. Students examine and analyze the Elements and Principles, either alone or in a myriad of combinations, to appreciate and understand established works of art and the vast array of possibilities open to them when creating their own work.

Al-Bayan Bilingual School officially adopted the American Education Reaches Out (AERO) Curriculum. AERO is a project supported by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Overseas Schools and the Overseas Schools Advisory Council to assist schools in developing and implementing standards-based curricula. Project AERO promotes and supports a Standards-Based Learning System (SBLS), a system in which instruction, assessment, grading and reporting are based on how well students demonstrate their understanding and mastery of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn in the course of their schooling. By careful and thorough implementation of this well constructed and spiraled curriculum, we can open up to our BBS students the rich and exciting world of language which permeates every corner of our lives.

Al-Bayan Bilingual School officially adopted the recently released US CCSSI (Common Core State Standards Initiative) Math Curriculum. This document has been the fruit of ten years of intensive scrutiny of not only the various US states’ math curricula, but also successful math curricula from Singapore, Hong Kong, and Korea. Emphasis in the CCSSI curricula is on the processes and proficiencies of longstanding importance in mathematics at all levels.

Music at Al-Bayan begins in our Preschool, with students learning to sing in both English and Arabic and use simple percussion instruments. Traditional songs are sung, as well as teacher created songs, incorporating educational themes and information, all put to well known melodies. Elementary School continues with singing and playing simple percussion instruments. Middle School continues to build on these foundation year skills in more sophisticated and complicated forms of singing and instrument playing. High School offers a variety of in-depth, daily, full-year courses where students study music theory and put the theory into practice for both vocal and instrumental development.

Physical Education at Al-Bayan School begins with formal classes in the Preschool and continues as a required course up through Grade 10. Locomotion and general movement exploration form the bedrock of the Preschool and Elementary Physical Education curricula. Middle School builds on these fundamental skills and enhances team activities, game strategies, skills, and “lead-up” games based on major sports. Grades 9 and 10 work on honing the specific skills and strategies of major sports, as well as learning offensive and defensive tactics. For students in Grades 11 and 12, the Physical Education Department offers electives. From Preschool through High School, continual emphasis is placed on good sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, proper care and safe use of equipment, as well as on the social and emotional development needed to become a good teammate and a gracious competitor.

Science at Al-Bayan School begins in the Nursery and continues up through the High school. The department puts great emphasis on the proper scientific steps and procedures used in all areas of science, and it structures its lessons to constantly bring these skills to the forefront. Science is broken down into “domains,” those being Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science, along with continual inclusion of the skills and knowledge of Scientific Investigation. Additionally, a connection to our human responsibility in protecting the natural world is addressed by our Fundamental Science Principles. In High School full-year courses in Biology and Chemistry are required for all students in Grades 9 and 10, and those students wishing to pursue deeper study in a branch of science from one of the three domains may do so. Elective courses in Health, Physical Science, and Environmental Science, in addition to AP level courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, are offered. All BBS designed curriculum for AP courses must receive the approval of the AP College Board prior to being offered to our students.
